China, 9 August 2025,
Malaysian franchise brands are setting their sights on China as the Entrepreneur and Cooperatives Development Ministry (KUSKOP), in partnership with the Malaysian Franchise Association (MFA), kicks off an international trade mission to Shanghai.
Running until Aug 10, the mission coincides with the China Franchise Expo 2025 at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre. Led by Deputy Minister Datuk Seri R Ramanan, the delegation includes Perbadanan Nasional Bhd, MFA and nine leading Malaysian franchises — Marrybrown, HOME Maths Therapy, Q-Dees, Smart Reader Kids, Midyson, US Pizza, Kenny Rogers Roasters, D’Sara Fried Chicken and Happy Potato.
KUSKOP said the initiative, part of the Enhancing Franchise Development Programme (EFDP), aims to expand Malaysian franchise presence in one of the world’s largest and fastest-growing markets. Past EFDP successes include Marrybrown in Australia, Global Art in Morocco, Laundrybar in Thailand and Little Caliphs in the UK.
“The mission will not only strengthen local brands abroad but also open opportunities for strategic collaborations with global partners,” said Ramanan, adding that KUSKOP is committed to positioning Malaysian franchises as top global contenders.
Ramanan shared that the China visit also featured a roundtable with the China Chain Store and Franchise Association to explore bilateral cooperation and better understand local market needs.
“This Shanghai mission is the first EFDP event for 2025, with follow-up trade missions planned for Japan, Kazakhstan and Indonesia through October,” he said.
